10 Best Coffee Places in Melbourne

In Australia we take our coffee drinking very seriously and in Melbourne it is a part of our daily routine. I don’t know about you, but I couldn’t start the day without my morning brew. And come 11 o’clock I’m ready for another coffee. I try not to have more than 2 coffees in a day, but hey, sometimes that’s not possible. We’re very fortunate that we have so many great coffee places in Melbourne. No matter whether it’s a cafe latte, cappuccino, long black, macchiato, flat white, espresso or mocha that you’re after there’s always somewhere nearby.

We can thank the many Italian immigrants who brought us their love of coffee and its culture. And thanks to the quality of coffee roasters in Melbourne we are so spoilt for choice and have the best coffee places in Melbourne.

Ballarat International Foto Biennale 2017

Just over an hours drive from Melbourne you will find the Ballarat International Foto Biennale. The exhibitions from 100 or so local and overseas photographers is spread across multiple venues in the township.

The main precinct is around the Art Gallery of Ballarat, The Mining Exchange, Post Office Gallery and Ballarat Trades Hall. You will also find photographs displayed in various laneways, cafes, shops, galleries and bars and pubs.

Whilst the main draw card of the BIFB is a rare look at the amazing, colorful, playful and surreal images by David LaChapelle at the Art Gallery of Ballarat, I was really looking forward to seeing some of the fringe exhibitions and outdoor public program.

IMG_1214

The streets and laneways around Ballarat come alive with the outdoor public program. Below is a selection of thought provoking images by Gohar Dashti from the series Stateless.

Eyes as Big as Plates is a collaboration by Karoline Hjorth and Riita Ikonen. The works are part sculpture, part installation and part photography. Each image in the series presents a solitary figure in a landscape, dressed in elements from their surroundings that indicate neither time nor place.

#Dysturb brings large-scale photojournalism to the streets drawing attention to world events. Reproduced in black and white and printed on thin matte paper that mimics the look and feel of newsprint, the images are a contrast to the urban landscape they are exhibited in.

Below is one of my favourite photographs by Maree Clarke at the exhibition Tell.

Sadly not all the venues were open on the day I visited, however I thoroughly enjoyed getting lost in so many wonderful images, of which only a few are highlighted here.

The Ballarat International Foto Biennale is on until September 17 and definitely worth visiting. And if you get hungry or thirsty whilst there, I can highly recommend stopping in at Mitchell Harris Wines for a bite.

Lunch in the Yarra Valley

Oakridge Winery - Yarra Valley

Oakridge Wines

Just an hours drive east of Melbourne and you’re on the doorstep of some of Victoria’s best wineries, delicious restaurants to tantalise your taste buds, magnificent art & culture, seasonal farmgate produce and meandering trails.

Oakridge Winery - Glasses of WineOakridge Winery Restaurant

Last weekend I was meeting friends for lunch at Oakridge Wines. We hadn’t seen each other for awhile so it was the perfect venue to sit back, relax, take in the view, catch up on all our news and indulge in a scrumptious lunch with fine wines to match.

It was a beautiful sunny day and the Yarra Valley was looking gorgeous with the freshness of winter in the air. We had the choice of 2 courses for $60 or 3 courses for $74.

We all chose 2 courses and unbeknown to each other we all chose the pork belly as our main. It was a crackling choice and the brussel sprouts with black garlic and XO sauce were the perfect accompaniment as was the 864 Chardonnay.

Crispy Pork Belly with Peanut SauceWhite rind cheese and Eccles cake

I normally don’t pick a dessert but I couldn’t resist the Eccles cake with white rind cheese. The cake was warm and the flaky pastry was to die for….I could have eaten quite a few but somehow managed to restrain myself…I know I’ll be back for more.

We laughed, we drank, we ate well and we couldn’t leave our long lunch without adding some wines and produce to take home. Thanks for a perfect day and I can’t wait to be back!

Cheers

Fika in Stockholm

Fika

Kanelbulle at Fotografiska

I recently traveled to Stockholm and discovered Fika; a ritual that Swedes enjoy on a daily basis. Fika can happen at any time of day, morning, afternoon or evening. It can be enjoyed at home, at work or in a café. You can do it alone or you can do it with friends.

Fika is about taking a moment to slow down and appreciate the good things in life.
It usually consists of a cinnamon bun called Kanelbulle, and coffee.

My 5 favourite Fika locations are Fabrique, Vete-katten, Saturnus, Green Rabbit and Fotografiska.

Rone “Empty” Solo Exhibition

Rone’s latest solo exhibition titled “Empty” was created in the incredible 1920’s Lyric Theatre, which is soon to be demolished. When first entering the space you are overwhelmed by a striking ten metre portrait on the back wall. It was totally mesmerising.

rone_emptyI am so glad I made it to the last day of the exhibition…one of the most inspiring collection of artwork. Not only will we be losing a massive work of art, it is such a pity we are losing another interesting building as it’s due to be demolished in a few weeks time.

Olympic dreams 2016

What it is about the Olympic Games that glues us to the TV every four years? I am there from the Opening Ceremony, watching as many events as I can each morning and night until the Closing Ceremony…and the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro are know different.
For me it doesn’t matter if it is the Winter Games or Summer Games, I love them both.

I was lucky enough to be in the Stadium at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games where Cathy Freeman won Gold in the 400m event in 49.11 seconds. It takes longer to reheat last nights dinner in the microwave than it took her to win her dream.

What I remember most is the silence before the race, you could hear a pin drop. Then once the starters gun went off the 112,000 crowd cheered so loudly for the entire race, you could feel the vibration in your body. Jubilant and overwhelmed, Freeman sank to the track and simply sat there for two minutes as the crowd cheered. She completed a lap of honour carrying both the Australian and Aboriginal flags.

So on to Rio where more memorable moments and dreams are captured.

Here are some of the highlights I have loved seeing in the first week.

Michael Phelps has cemented himself in Olympic history after winning an astonishing 23 Gold Medals. Most dream of winning one and I doubt any would expect to be competitive at four Olympic Games. This is what legends are made of.

Sunday at Albert Park Lake

Gone were the grey skies on this fresh but still Melbourne winter’s day. I headed to Albert Park Lake, one of my favorite spots for a morning walk.  With my headphones in listening to The National and London Grammar I leisurely walked the 4.7km circuit.

I was joined by a few joggers, others walking their pooches, some rowers on the lake, a few learning to sail in small boats and kids on bikes. It is an easy and enjoyable walk with magnificent views of the city skyline.

Some might know Albert Park Lake as the home of the Australian Grand Prix in March. However I prefer it during the other 11 months when the road is not closed and the birds haven’t been removed.

I always love seeing the black swans, especially when they are crossing the road heading home after grazing on the lush green grass on the edge of the golf course. They certainly stop the traffic as they waddle across the road with their babies following…always puts a smile on my face.

Happy Sunday!

Top 10 things to do in New York City

There is so much to see and do in New York City…this city is my dream city. You can just get lost in the neighborhoods. As a visitor to this great metropolis, it’s great to spend a full day exploring one of the neighborhoods and not trying to go from Lower Manhattan, to Colombus Cirlcle to Greenwich Village to Soho all in the same day. Spend a day in each and that way you get to find some hidden gems whilst exploring.

I love walking the streets and looking up at the skyscrapers, listening to the sounds of the city and taking in the different aroma’s. I particularly like visiting the museums and galleries on the Upper East Side, such as the Guggenheim – I always go straight to the top level and then wind my way down.

Central Park is a vast and majestic rectangle of open space in the middle of Manhattan. The people’s park is a leisure space for all New Yorker’s. While parts of the park swarm with joggers, in-line skaters, cyclists, musicians and tourists on weekends you can still find some quieter moments to enjoy the elm-lined walkways, the Bow Bridge connecting Cherry Hill and the Ramble, Belvedere Castle, Strawberry Fields memorial to John Lennon, Sheep Meadow, the Loeb Boathouse and one very famous statue of Alice in Wonderland.

I have been fortunate enough to see New York’s famous landmarks from the air on a couple of occassions with an exhilarating 15-minute helicopter tour. As you fly above the Hudson River the flight takes you past the World Financial Center, around the Statue of Liberty and over Ellis Island, past the iconic Empire State Building and Chrysler Building, alongside the sprawling expanse of Central Park all the way to Yankee Stadium and back.

New York is a walking city and it’s a great place to people watch, so put on your sneakers and hit the pavement.

Lady Liberty, designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, was a gift to the United States from the people of France. The copper statue is of a robed female figure representing Libertas, the Roman goddess, who bears a torch and a tablet evoking the law upon which is inscribed the date of the American Declaration of Independence, 4 July 1776. A broken chain lies at her feet and represents freedom.

The High Line is a must do. What was once a dingy rail line is now one of New York’s best-loved attractions due to stunning views of the Hudson River, public art installations, lounge chairs for soaking up some sun and a unique perspective on the neighborhood streets below.

Whether or not it’s a love of baseball, American football, Ice Hockey or Basketball, New York has it all and it’s a great days entertainment.  Even the pre and post cheersquads are great to see. Always love seeing the Yankees playing their fierce rival the Boston Red Sox.

There is always a celebrity playing on or off-Broadway and there are so many shows to choose from. As a theatre tragic, it’s one of the first things I book tickets to.

On a sunny day there is nothing better that walking the Brooklyn Bridge. Whether you start in Brooklyn and walk across it to Manhattan or vice versa, it’s well worth it for the views over the River and of the city skyline. As you cross it, you will often see artists drawing, painting or photographing the bridge and it has appeared in so many movies including The Docks of New York, Godzilla, Moonstruck and Spider-Man to name a few.

Brooklyn Bridge – locks of love

It’s not uncommon to stumble across a tv show or movie filming on the streets of New York. On this particular day I came across a fashion shoot for a high-end magazine whilst wandering around the Meatpacking District.

For me the view from the Top of the Rock trumps the Empire State Building as it’s less crowded and actually offers a view of the Empire State Building itself. You also have an awesome view of Central Park and Upper Manhattan.

I just happened to come across this handwritten quote on the pavement, and I think it truely represents the spirit and belief of New Yorkers.

DSC02027

So true!

My top 10 things to see and do in New York City:

  1. Guggenheim Gallery / MOMA / Metropolitan Museum of Art
  2. Central Park – go for a bike ride, it’s fantastic
  3. Helicopter Ride
  4. Statue of Liberty (Ellis Island is worth a stop too)
  5. The High Line
  6. Go to a game at Giants or Yankee Stadium or see a Broadway Show
  7. Brooklyn Bridge walk
  8. Meatpacking District and Soho
  9. Top of the Rock
  10. Explore the neighborhoods

Ok, so I had to combine a couple to keep it to a top 10 list. This is just the beginning of some things to do and see in New York and that is why I will never get bored of visiting this inspiring metropolis. I’m not done with New York City and New York City is not done with me, so until next time!

I would love to hear what your favourite places are in New York.

Thanks for stopping by!

Hellenic Hotel

MasterChef George Calombaris has finally landed in Williamstown with the long-awaited opening of the Hellenic Hotel. The multi-level establishment is located on the site of the former Hobson’s Bay Hotel, which was one of the longest standing pubs in the West.

The restaurant downstairs is divided in to two sections. Both areas have an industrial design with whitewashed brick walls, blond timber beams, steel piping overhead, greenery in hanging baskets and many hues of blue scattered throughout.

Mum and I were lunching their mid week in celebration of her birthday. It was a glorious sunny winters day and we were seated with rays of sunshine pouring in from above and with a birds eye view of the bustling kitchen.

Of course we started with a lovely glass of champagne to toast the special occasion. Then the difficult task of what to indulge our taste buds in…so many great choices…
